QA Metrics, ROI Measurement, and the Dangers of Catch-22
Gek Yeo, Head of QA, AICPA & Andrew Brown, Independent Consultant
Abstract:
In the novel Catch-22, why did American warplanes bomb a shoal of fish in the sea, rather than the enemy? And why did their commander celebrate this, rather than criticise their waste of resources? And what on earth does this have to do with software testing?
These things are all connected by the cognitive bias known as the surrogation effect.
Organisations invest in testing with a goal in mind, then develop QA metrics and ROI measurements to track progress towards that goal. But sometimes a team may lose sight of that goal and instead substitute their own surrogate goal, of maximising their score on the QA and ROI metrics.
In this session, Gek and Andrew start by looking at why the characters within Catch-22 abandoned their assigned goal and instead drifted into the bizarre behaviour of bombing fish. They then use this knowledge to understand the problems we encounter when software teams lose sight of their original goal and substitute instead a goal of maximising the measures that were originally intended to drive their progress towards that goal.
We explore what drives teams into this dysfunctional behaviour, plus its consequences. We look at attribute substitution, the mechanism that allows surrogation to occur. We then identify the conditions typically present within an organisation that increase the risk of surrogation occurring. We also look at how our choice of metrics, team structure, plus other factors, like absence of psychological safety, can unintentionally drive behaviour towards surrogation. Next, we look at the possible consequences of surrogation upon the true value of the test suites that we build.
We conclude by showing how organisations can address this problem, through restructuring their development teams, plus constructing their metrics and goals in ways to minimise the risk of automation for its own sake becoming an unintended goal.
Come along to our session and learn how to avoid your test team bombing fish in the sea!

Achieving Continuous Quality Through People, Process, Tools & Outcomes
Stuart Day, Sr. Leader & Co-founder, Quality Talks
Abstract:
Shifting left, is no longer enough.
In fact, it never has been as it often focused solely on testing and not all the possible quality enablers.
This is where the concept of continuous quality comes in, but what is it really, and how can it be achieved?
In his talk, Stu Day will describe his continuous quality journey (which started back in 2020), what it really is and how to start on your own journey to achieving it.

NeuroDiversity, Diversity and Mental Health in Testing: Strategic advantages you were
not aware of
Andrew Shaw, QA Test Analyst, Loxam
Abstract:
Many neurodivergent professionals have so much to offer to the Tech Industry, as well as offering unique perspectives to solving different testing challenges, however many work environments are not built with them in mind, as well as for professionals from different backgrounds, and can make it challenging for them to thrive. The consequences for not building inclusive environments can include missing out on potential ideas to make your businesses thrive, not discovering different ways to address different problems in your organisation and can include potential fines if your business is not accommodating.
Andrew will also describe some of the barriers that still exist today, which prevent professionals from diverse backgrounds from succeeding, the benefits of a diverse workforce and what this can bring to develop testing and testing strategies, including those who are neurodivergent. Andrew will also explain ways testing teams can encourage, inspire and increase diversity, as well as ways professionals from diverse backgrounds can develop their careers as testers.
This talk will include ways testers, both individuals and teams, can manage their mental health and look after their wellbeing.

Ops-Driven Development
Speaker: Samer Naqvi, Principal Consultant, GlobalLogic
Abstract: We’ve all been there; the build is green, the release goes out, and then… something breaks in production. But what if our biggest lessons, the ones that truly harden our systems, come from the moments we dread the most? The “oops” moments.
This talk advocates for Oops-Driven Development, a mindset that views intentional failure as a way to build resilience. Inspired by chaos engineering, it involves deliberately breaking things in controlled ways to reveal the flaws that our tests and pipelines overlook. We'll explore how simulating outages, injecting latency, and crashing services in non-prod environments can reveal what your happy path hides.
Through storytelling, real-world examples, and a bit of mischief, you'll learn:
-
Why failure is a better teacher than success
-
How to start chaos testing without blowing up production
-
The tools, techniques, and team mindset you need to run safe, insightful experiments
-
Why “oops” moments should be celebrated, not feared
